TRD OR shopping questions

Finally saved up for a used TRD Off-Road. I'll be a first time Tacoma owner and first time truck owner. I've got a couple questions you all may be able to help with.

I'm wanting a 2016-2018 TRD Off-Road with low mileage (<25k) While there are a lot on the market, I'm wanting one with a sunroof so my options are more limited.

1. Price: Is it reasonable to find these for under $30k?

2. Color: I prefer the Magnetic Gray over the Black, but only because I'm concerned black will be hard to keep clean and that scratches will show easily. Problem is that I'm seeing several in black but not very many in Gray. Am I overly concerned about this?

3. Any other advice as I go shopping?

Welcome to the forum. Sunroof is with the premium package.
1. $30k isn’t to far off for a used off-road. They hold their value. Less than 25 miles for under 30k might not happen especially if you want options like tech and premium packages.
2. Black takes a special person to own. It is hard to keep clean and does shoe a lot. I’d get MGM.
3. Be patient and don’t settle. If you have the money the right one will come along and you’ll get it. Know what you’re looking for, know how much you want to pay and find it.
Carguru, CL, call local dealers and tell them exactly what you’re looking for the one that wants your business will call you back and actually try to find it. Others will just try to get you on the lot and sale you anything they have.
Good luck.

Great advice. I have it in my mind that I have to find one by the end of the month but really I don't need to. Thanks for your tip on the color. Black looks so good on the lot but I keep on hearing people say they once owned a black car and will never again.

I wouldn’t make it my first choice. Ive owned a couple and every time I say I won’t do that again haha. They look great when they are clean. Keeping them that way is a full time job.

Grey shows scratches too... haha.

My last Tacoma was black, I really love this color but both are really hard for me to keep clean. Haha20181107_234554.jpeg

I test drove a TRD with a sunroof and the driver compartment felt more crowded! Im not sure how tall you are but Im only 5'10 and to me it was noticeable over the models without a sun roof. And I am with you on the black! I have owned nothing but black trucks, but man are they a pain. I got grey this time around!!! Kind of wish I would have done silver to hide scratches!o_O

Have you looked at new? I paid $33,000 for my TRD offroad with 4 miles on it. I also wanted to buy used until I started looking and found the used ones are not much less than a new truck. Granted mine does not have the premium package. The 2018's are a real good deal now as the dealers are clearing their lots for the 2019's. Good luck...

I never owned a truck either but I made up my mind that I wanted to get a 2nd gen tacoma. I actually started looking at some of the earlier 2nd gens maybe around 10 to 12 years old and every tacoma I saw that was 4x4and in good condition was somewhat pricey for being over 10 years old. So I figure I may as well look for something a little bit newer since apparently they hold their value so well. So I started looking at 2013's to 2015 and again, I was like WTF? Why are these things so damn expensive then I was like,"well what does a new one cost"? Looked at 16's and 17's and was astonished that they were still basically going for damn near the same price as a new one. So I was like F'it I may as well just buy a new one. So I ended up with my dcsb trd sport in black. Couldn't be happier. So I will say this if you can afford around 30k I would suggest you find yourself a good end of year deal on a 2018 model because what you pay for a used one compared to a new one isn't really that big of a difference because they hold their value so well.

That's how I ended up in my 17 after deciding that I was going to find a 3rd 2nd gen... nope. I'll take on my own problems for the same price as getting someone else's... Haha

Don’t know what part of the country you are in, but here in Oregon used Tacos list for what I paid for mine new ($35,000). Go on sites like autotrader and carmax to see what the prices are in your area.

I stopped at the dealer for a brochure on the 2018 Tacomas. As I turned to park my GMC, I heard the dreaded 'crack', which signals that the front hub bearing went south. Got 66K out of the OE set, 60K out of this set. That changed my mode from information to purchase.

I wanted a white long bed off road with all the fun on it. They had none, but the blue pearl caught my eye, and six hours later I went home with it and left my beloved GMC behind.

I didn't tell the dealer about the front hub bearing, and he didn't tell me that they never checked the fluid levels in my Tacoma before they gave me the keys. Figure we are even.

The Tacoma listed for $38K plus delivery, I argued them down to $37K for the truck and got $7K on my GMC, which was clean.

I have done a little new shopping. What packages did yours come with?

Looking at a 2017 TRD OR that has 11,000 on it. The dealer is offering $34k, it has the Premium Tech package and a bed cover. Seems like I could get a new one for cheaper....
