Got the notification Saturday it was time for an oil change. I went to Firestone to get it changed and was told my 17 Taco takes a specific synthetic oil. Needless to say an hour later turned out to be a $90 oil change. Is this normal or did I choose the wrong place to get it changed? If so what’s your suggestions on locations? I don’t do Walmart

Id assume if u cant do it yourself, taking them the proper oil and filter purchased elsewhere may save u money.

Appreciate it I guess it all evens out if we’re told to get it changed every 5k miles

Does it?

I change my 2006 evrry 5k and the oil runs about $35 and the filter is $5

Have you actually priced the items needed for a 3rd gen oil change?

I haven’t yet I’ll need to find more time. Being married and one boy also 60hrs of work a week takes all my time. I will be looking in to it though.

I change my 2016 tacoma every 5K and the oil is plenty dirty. I couldn’t sleep at night if I stretched it to 10k. If you read the manual close it says to change it at 5K if you are towing etc. Those guys who make that 0w-20w oil need to eat too. Also the maintenance required light comes on after about 4500 miles and you have to stare at it for @500 miles which really bugs me. I’m rolling with 5K oil changes [emoji1303]

I’d love to have that done too for a definitive answer. If someone had it done with normal driving conditions in a good mix of city and highway miles that would be comparable results for most drivers.
Any ideas on where you send a sample for analysis and what the cost is?

I’ve always been on the fence with the 10k changes too. Honestly I’ve never let one go over 5k, even with synthetic. I was going to attempt it with the 0w-20 on the 17 Tacoma but I’m at about 4,400 miles now and it’s starting to bother me! Will probably have to go ahead and do the 5k change. I can definitely see the importance if you are towing much or doing a significant amount of hard driving.
Devil’s Advocate to that is these engines were tested under all conditions with the recommended oil weight by the manufacturer so their guidelines should be pretty safe to follow. If nothing else Toyota is losing money with 10k changes with less service visits.

They still want you to bring it in every 5k Miles they just change the oil every 10k. They aren’t loosing any money.
