Intermittent loss of power while driving

I have a 2004 V6 Prerunner that has begun to drop power intermittently while driving. It doesn't happen when it's idle, only when I'm driving. If anyone can help me troubleshoot or suggest any parts that would be associated with this problem I would really appreciate it. I just bought a new fuel filter but haven't installed it yet.

If so, there could be many different problems. I've heard that the cat can go bad and cause a lot of back pressure causing loss of power.

I had a similar problem with my Jeep, it was caused by dirty fuel injectors. I dump a bottle of Techron in the tank and 100 miles latter the problem was gone.

Ok well I'm not sure where the fuel filter is on the first gens but if fuel is getting to the filter then the only way it couldn't be getting fuel is clogged injectors. But the problem might not be due to that. I would try what Tacoma Dave said. If that doesn't work then I would take a look at your cats.

Ok. I thought that was what you were talking aboot but you never know. I'll try the cleaner and go from there. Thanks for all the help and the quick respones

Are you hearing any rattle at idle or certain rpms? If you do have a clogged cat, it may rattle from loose material in the pipe. You can also take a rubber mallet and lightly tap the cat to see if it rattles. I've experienced this in the same symptoms in the past with my S10, the catalytic convertor was the culprit.

ok, better late than never. I just got my Tacoma 2 days ago. I'm having the same issue. I'm not getting the tale tell clatter of a blocked EGR. The truck had a little over 1/2 a tank when I got it so I haven't added any fuel (hence I don't know when or where it was obtained from). That being said we recently flooded here so it isn't totally out of the realm of possibility for there to be water in it. It IS GETTING WORSE. it did rain last night/early this morning before driving the vehicle so I'm not sure if that is a contributor. Any and all suggestions accepted. @ DrDickhole. what di you find to be the issue?

good advice on this forum, I also have a 04’ v6 pre runner, and at a light, turns green I can feel the hesitation also when slowing into a turn same hesitation when this happens i do use the techron in the tank and I’ll say it works but, I also I’m not doing it with every tank fill so there might be my answer, I find that by Cleaning the throttle body at the opening it improves for 4-6 months till It starts all over again, talked to mechanic buddy his answer it’s a old car, keeping it alive tho, someone has the answer and i’m going to check out the catalytic

Have you seafoam-ed the throttle body, valves, and pistons together yet? Its going to make the engine smoke like all hell, but it does work if fed in the right amounts.
