Four-Wheel Drive Usage Frequency

I turn mine on every chance I get. If it’s raining... on... if I go on a dirt road... on... if I go off road... on... even if I don’t need it... on.
I take it out and turn on 4lo and get the rear locker working about once a month. My trucks rear locker will engage without moving much.

I used 4lo this past weekend just to remove a bush from the front of the house.... needed? Definitely not, but i paid for the button, might as well use it!

It's good advice from the manual, but to keep the actuator in the transfer case and rear locker working you need to engage them from time to time.

Toyota mechanic shared with me that the only fails he's seen is from inactivity.

Yup, that's been a thing for a long time, on many different makes. Haha
I use mine a lot more than that anyway, I'm surrounded by national forest then the desert starts at the bottom of the hill. I get out there and explore every chance I get.

I guess I’m dumb but what does that mean? This is my first 4wd...

It’s like anything mechanical. The 4x4 needs to be engaged to keep everything oiled up and working.
When they set they get to where they are harder to engage and are more prone to fail.
