Mods, Accessories, Info, How To

If I was going to change my own oil id use either m1 afe0/20 or m1 ep 0/20, however I'm thinking I'll just take mine back to the dealer and have it done with toyota 0/20. According to PQIA testing the toyota oil has a lot more moly in it than the m1 does. Besides I'll get my tires rotated at the same time.

I was thinking the same thing until I heard horror stories of techs tightening the plastic filter housing with an impact gun. Plus, I think the local dealer employs this guy??

I add a few ounces of zddp (zinc) every oil change to any of my vehicles.

LOL, I hear ya. I'm not a very trusting person when it comes to letting someone work in my vehicle. I haven't made up my mind as to what I'm gonna do yet, still have some time left before I'm do.

I'm resurrecting this thread in the hopes of coming across a few mods of my own in the next few month's I hope the op is still here and doesn't mind.

Full speaker upgrade.

Factory non JBL speakers are cheap paper.
I replaced the dash tweeters, all four door speakers and installed a sub.

I went with Crutchfield for the door speakers as they provide any needed wire adapters and the speaker mount adapters.

I don’t recall off hand the part numbers, but 4 speakers cost less than $200 - Kicker brand,

Door panel removal was easy (thanks YouTube). I did use a trim removal kit (yes, from Amazon) to aid in this process.

For the dash speakers/ tweeters - they share the same manufacture with Subaru.
Genuine Subaru H631SFJ101 tweeter kit. (Kicker brand)

Ordered from Amazon.
$96

Careful when removing the tweeter trim cover, it’s easy to snap off the retaining clips. You’ll also need a stubby socket to remove the 2 bolts for the speaker just under the windshield. I used a shallow 1/4 drive set.

For the sub, I went with a 10” Rockford Fosgate Prime R1S4-10 (150 way - 4 Ohm).
$47
From Amazon.

I already had a R1-4 Ohm amp, so this kept it easy on the pocket book. The amps are still on Amazon for about $50-70.

The box and harness from the stereo came from Tacotunes.

The harness was a plug & play from the back of the deck to the amp mounted behind the passenger rear seat. Just remember to plug the other stuff back into the rear of the deck, I got done and had no nav, cause I left it unplugged.

They do offer 12 boxes, but I didn’t need that much bass. 10” box is $109.

The harness is the “Plug and play add a subwoofer harness”.
$35

Hardest part was running the wires. I ordered a amp kit from Amazon, or you can pick one up at walmart or your local stereo store. When in doubt, go longer on the wires so you don’t run out 3/4 of the way through the install.

I ran the wires through a rubber nipple on the passenger firewall and down under the door trim panels. I did have to squeeze it through the B pillar where the seat belt anchors, I loosened the trim and used a metal coat hanger to feed it through both the nipple and B pillar.

All in all this took about 5 hours.

I’m very pleased with the sound.

The plastic back of the seat on the driver side rear passenger seat had to be removed to make the box fit, as did the storage compartment behind the driver rear seat. I couldn’t add a grill either but you shouldn’t need one as it’s behind the seat with no possibility of being punctured.

No pic of the amp, theirs a car seat strapped in blocking the way.

All stereo functions work as they did with the factory system.

I was able to ground the amp near the rear seat.

I did have to drill out a hole to pass the wires through on both sides of the plastic trim behind the passenger rear seat.

Pretty much did the same thing songs I’ve hear a million times sound amazing with different sounds from different instruments never heard with mediocre speakers.

Did the speaker replace this past Spring. Pioneer 6x9 components in the front doors with Kenwood 6.75" 3 way in the rear doors. Next step will be to replace the head unit. Still working the limits of the OEM CD/AM/FM unit. Also did the sound damping in doors and back wall.

Sound is much improved. Although the OEM head unit doesn't have enough output to properly drive the speakers. Just need to be patient until the $$ loosen up a bit. Year end has a few serious bills come due. December cash flow is a bitch.

Just be aware the newer ones acomas with jbl units. Have a separate amp not in the regular trim tacomas so don’t even bother with that upgrade. Your better off researching what will plug an play. I’m happy with an added powered sub amp. And speaker upgrade with deadening. I’m done with ear bleeds lol.

My ol' Gen2 doesn't have the JBL feature. It does have the OEM 6CD changer/AM/FM with 12 presets......... ;) It begins to drive the speakers when the sound level is pushed beyond "30". Although, when AC/DC Thunder comes on......the volume is quickly maxed out.

IIRC the OEM units only produce about 4 W output. The head units I'm considering will output 22W, so more than 4X what I have. I don't see a need for an amp or sub. No reason to have the body panels buzzing to the beat. Don't wanna sound like a tweaker.

I’m in the same boat but went with a powered sub amp.
Just to piss off the rap attack a$$hole next to me at the light.
