Gas mileage with and without using the ECT button

I made a trip to WV from NJ just this past week. The same route to and from home, filled up at the same gas stations both ways, even waited for the same pumps. The payload in the truck was the same both ways.

On the way to WV I did not use the ECT button. Cruise control was used both ways, transmission is S6. Traffic was almost identical both ways, virtually none. All regular gas, tank filled on slow until the pump clicked off. No rounding up.

I filled up twice on the way to Charleston WV. The first fill up was at a Sunoco station, 18.16 mpg. Next was when I pulled into Charleston WV at a Marathon station, 19.12 mpg.

I filled up at the above Marathon station in Charleston before I left for home. Around town mileage with a lot of short trips was 11.00 mpg. Not surprised there.

On the return trip I used cruise and the ECT button.

First fill up gave me 18.07 mpg, which is .09 mpg lower than not using the ECT button. I would call that the same mileage.

My last fill up gave me a spectacular 26.5 mpg. An increase of 8.3 mpg over the same area when going to Charleston WV. I double checked the math, and that figure is accurate.

Something that I did notice is that my transmission DOES shift into S6 while using the ECT button. I verified this by downshifting into S5 and watched the revs climb, then drop to where they were when in S6.

Average mileage going to Charleston WV was 18.64 mgp. The return trip to Joisey the average mileage was 22.29 mpg.

When using the ECT in S6 I noticed that the transmission downshifted to only S5 on steep hills and upshifted sooner than not using the ECT.

Contrary to what Toyota says, at least my transmission will upshift into S6 when using the ECT.

All speed limits were observed, going both ways.

I should add that the truck has just shy of 8000 miles on it. When I bought it in 08 and made the trip the truck had under 2500 miles and got less than 15 mpg tops, in drive and using cruise control.

After youre first post, maybe someone else's I don't remember now, but anyway, I started playing with my ect to see what it would or wouldn't do. Like you said in drive with ect on it does go into 6th gear, only sport mode cuts out 6th gear. Always kinda wandered why the ect light in the dash was green instead of yellow like the rest of them. Maybe its trying to tell us go for it, its a good thing, you'll like it.

Toyota told me that sport mode and ECT cut out 6th gear. It does not on my truck. 70 mph is 1750 to 1800 rpm using the ECT and sport mode in 6th gear.

Whoa... 58mph is exactly 2000rpm in 6th in my manual...

*EDIT... I have 285's... 58 according to the speedo, best I can tell 58mph with 285's is actually 60 when I pass those digital things that flash when you do 2mph over... lol

Not disputing youre results but I always get better mileage when heading towards the beach than on return trip back home. No mountain driving but just a slight elevation change.

OK, the light bulb went off in my head today while I was driving. Two months prior to my WV trip I installed the stainless steel Borla cat back exhaust. Perhaps that could have had something to do with the increase in mileage.

Ive been thinking about this. When I had my Ram I changed the muffler and while on a day to day basis I really liked it on trips the drone made me wish I had the stock muffler back on. Is there any big difference in sound with the Borla, or is it just better flowing? You also have a tune on youres too don't you?

Except for the K&N air filter and the TRD air box, my truck is bone stock. I rigged a pressure tap for the exhaust at pipe flange just forward of the muffler. It read 16-20 inches of mercury (average). I checked at 3K, 4K, 5K an 6K rpm. The higher pressure was at higher rpm. After the Borla exhaust it dropped to 10-13 inches of mercury.

The Borla exhaust isn't more loud, it's a deeper sound but not louder. OK, perhaps a little louder at peak rpm. The rpm rise is quite a bit faster with the Borla exhaust, especially once you get to 4K rpm. It did nothing that I can feel as far as killing low rpm throttle response.

Damn, santa may need a bigger bag this year. Mine is completely stock except for a K&N drop in.
If you're looking at the Borla, don't forget to order the extra piece of straight pipe if you have the 4 door truck and 6 foot bed. Also price shop, as prices vary greatly. I bought mine from Jegs, as it had the best price at the time.

Yeah, I seen the extra pipe option, ive got the short bed 4 door. I just looked at carid as thats where I've bought some stuff before, their price was $618. If I get serious I will do some shopping though.

Before you hang the exhaust under your truck, trial fit the muffler to the front and rear pipe. My muffler had the outlet pipe slightly out of round, which made it difficult to slide the tail pipe in. A 6 inch C clamp with minimal pressure on the pipe brought it back to round and everything slid together.
