2020 1st oil change

I bought my Tacoma new in July here in Daytona Beach, Florida. I had to order it and it took 3 months... I suppose because of COVID.

I like doing my own vehicle maintenance. But it's free at the dealership plus I think they rotate the tires.

I have 3,358 miles on it. At 5K should I take it to the dealer for the oil change?

Thanks

Certainly! They may give you the, "Ten thousand miles is the recommended time to change" speech though.

I never did take my truck to the dealership for free oil changes, I don't trust them. I've heard too many horror stories and it seems when people take their truck to the dealership they start having problems JMO.

I’d go either every 6 months or 5k miles what ever comes first. You’ve got 4 services in 2 years or 25k miles so every 6 months or 5k basically.

I do all my own maintenance that I can. I change oil and filter at 6 months which is 5/6 thousand miles. My SR5 doesn't have a skid plate per say its more of a pan but 4 bolts and it's off. The front 2 bolts are up behind the spoiler but not that hard to get out as the spoiler moves pretty easy. After the first time you'll k ow exactly what you're doing and won't be an issue at all. The only reason that any maintenance has to be done at dealer or another shop is if you have an extended warranty. I'm not an extended warranty guy so it don't concern me. Doing youre own oil changes and service will not void youre basic factory warranty. The only reason I go back to the dealer is for recalls, warranty work, or something thats above my knowledge or physical capabilities.

My first oil change is due in January, by then i'll have around 3,500-4,000 miles on the odo. When they scheduled my first appointment 3 months ago, i told them i wouldn't accumulate the acquired mileage in that time. At any rate the dealers service writer told me they only will replace the oil that there's no need to replace the filter at such a low mileage, they will do it only at 10k miles. Seems stupid to me they would leave some older motor oil in the engine.

This is strictly my opinion but changeing youre oil without changeing youre filter is like taking a shower and putting youre dirty underwear back on. The first oil change is the most important for changing youre filter. The filter has trapped any stray dirt and debrey that could have accumulated during assembly plus a higher number of wear metals just from break in. Thats one of the reasons I do all my own oil changes because I know for certain the filter got changed. Even though changing the filter is no big deal to do I could deffinatly see the dealer bypassing that step.

I too am a bit old school and wanted my first oil and filter changed at 5K miles but no, the dealer made a big deal about it. I was a little pissed but gave in and will go along with their plan for now as I do get free oil changes. I am going to mark my old filter so I make sure they do actually change it however, just sayin. Everyone be safe.

I got a call from my dealer this week rescheduling my truck from jan. to feb., a full month later. They then asked me to estimate what the trucks milage would be about. Told them probably something around 6k miles, or a bit less. This is the part i couldn't believe. Their guy then told me they would not change the oil, or filter at that mileage, only at 10k miles, instead said they only rotate the tires, and do some bs multi-point inspection. I got teed off, and told them they ought to do the oil change, and filter regardless. Well, he told me he'd check, and call me back. At least they did just before lunch, and agreed to do both the oil, and filter, as well as the other stuff. All I can say is sayonara to them once this toyota care is up.

Glad I searched this first...

I bought mine on 12/30/2020, I’ll have 2k miles on it next week. I called the dealer to ask about setting up the first service. Evidently I’m REALLY older school, I planned to do the first oil change at 3k miles... Anyway, he told me 10k for the first oil change! [emoji46] That just sounds crazy! Sure, synthetic oil, blah blah blah... What about the filter!?! The point was made earlier in the thread about build debris and break in metals and what not. No F-ing way I’m waiting 10k to change the damn oil! [emoji36] Hurumph!

I did get the extend warranty and service crap from Toyota. I’m a bit nervous about all that now after hearing the general opinions here. I know they were selling me something but these guys seemed pretty genuine. I’m not an asshole but I don’t end up with the short end of the stick too often. Hopefully all goes well with my dealer. I will be changing the oil at 3k regardless , either through them or in the damn driveway.

It’s mileage or time. It should be changed at 1 year or 10k miles which ever comes first. The free service is every 6 months or 5k miles they rotate tires and do inspection at 6 months 5k miles and at 1 year or 10k miles they do tire rotation, inspection and oil change. I think you get that for 2 years or 25k miles which ever comes first. If you bought the extended one then you get that for what ever you paid for.
