10 miles in 4wd every month

Reading through my manual again, I saw that it is recommended to drive at least 10 miles every month in 4wd. This is supposed to keep parts lubricated. How necessary do you think this really is? I don't have anywhere nearby to use my 4wd that often.

I believe they just want you to engage it. I do every so often. I turn it on and drive about a mile and turn it off. Makes sense to me.

But never drive in 4wd on dry pavement!

I wish I could. If only they would stop maintaining roads and plowing snow. That would be a perfect world.

You can drive in 4 wheel anywhere. Even if it's a paved road. If you turn hard then the tires will turn over each other. That's about it. I engage it a few times a month. You can engage it on the way to work. When you get there just turn it off. I wouldn't do 60+ mph in 4 hi but, engage it none the less.

I have anyways heard that 4wd on dry pavement can damage front end drive components.

Woudent recommend driving on pavement in 4x4. Just find a dirt road lock it in and drive that's what I do

Doesn't hurt if you stay straight, just don't turn... I will typically engage about once a month on a straight road, never had any problems...

If ur going straight its fine! Before your coming into a harsh curve or making a left or right at an intersection disengage. Or dont and fracture a thumb when the steering wheel bucks...your choice really.

From a mechanical standpoint, driving in a straight line slower than the maximum stress the drive gears can take is no problem but don't turn! The Taco has limited slip differentials and would be torn apart easily on pavement.

This is soo true, it is in the manual, so i would do it, makes total sense. Also true about dry pavement, its okay, just dont turn, i usually wait for a good rain then drive part of the way home in 4high.

It's been quite a few years since I've had a 4WD vehicle. Is it ok to run 4WD on a dry gravel road?

You'll be fine on gravel, the gravel is a loose service...

Pop it like it’s hot. I get 10 miles about every other month from March to sept and more between Oct. and Feb. Weather be like... Tacoma be like what!

A straight road is all you need. I use 4wd on pavement often and have to for the best launch at the drag strip. One tire fire with a supercharger screaming and the engine on the rev limiter is not pretty.
