Fender flares can make one hell of a difference, expensive but worth it in my opinion for bush whacker fenders!

You're on the right track! Suspension lift is the way to go, I have a 3 inch Old Man Emu suspension lift on my taco and it's great! Haven't had any problems for 3 years now.
