Cedar Rapids breaks single-day snowfall record for November on Saturday
The prolonged snowfall event Saturday has broken a record that has stood for 132 years!

Reports of 10-12" of snow in Cedar Rapids would break the record for the most snow in a single day during the month of November.

The previous record was 9" on Nov. 22, 1893. The record for the most snow in a single day in the winter is likely safe, which was set on Feb. 26, 1954 at 16.7"

This snow has also broken the record for the largest first accumulating snow on record in Cedar Rapids. That record was previously 6.5" on Oct. 26, 1997.

Our first snow of the season usually produces around an inch. This one was certainly a doozy for a first snow.

WEST BRANCH, Iowa (KCRG) - Cars and semis remain wrecked on the sides of I-80 after several crashes and hours-long delays Saturday.

First responders received the call for the first crash on I-80 around 9:30 Saturday morning. After that, slick conditions led to a chain reaction that caused dozens of crashes within a six-mile stretch.

“I’ve been here for a long time. I haven’t seen anything like this.. this big for a long time,” said Chief Kevin Stoolman with the West Branch Fire Department.

Multiple crashes in both directions

West Branch was the first department on scene. As they were working on clearing the first accident, a second happened in the eastbound lanes.

Back in the blizzard of 1978, we had twice that record snowfall in a one 3 day storm here. Drifts were up to the telephone street pole wires, and some places over that. For a week I did grocery shopping, and other errands for local residents riding into town on my snowmobile. Took even longer for the roads to get open enough for only 4wd vehicles.
