Hey fellow tacoma fans:

I purchased three years ago a 1998, v6, automatic, xtended cab, 4by4 with only 46k origional miles. I took it in for an oil change @ 70k and my mechanic diagnosed leaky valve cover gaskets. They quoted $375.00 out the door and this garage has an excellent reputation in my local community. They have preformed previous work on my truck since my purchase ie altanator replacement, full tune-up, oil changes@every 3500mi,
Replace starter ect. Please message back to let me know what you guys think. I'm new to tacoma's so please feel free to comment on what I should expect for future mechanical / engine related servive issues.

I have a 2000, got it at 125k and now at 173k. I've replaced my starter, alternator, tension pulley for my ac belt, and radiator. But I usually ride it hard and put it up wet. It you treat her right, especially if you don't wheel, there wont be many problems.

If you have one shop working on your truck, it's best to stick with it to maintain trust and avoid confusion.

I could believe leaky valve cover gaskets. Are you asking us if we think that's a legit diagnosis? Look at them, are they leaky? Do you see oil coming out of them?

A truck that old with so few miles (did you forget a 2 in front of 46k?) has been sitting A LOT, which means that any and all seals are probably at least a little bit dried out. This causes them to shrink and start to leak.

You might get lucky and let them rejuvenate themselves by changing the oil every 1000 miles with high-quality synthetic oil.

Yes, the 98 that I purchased only had 46,400 origional miles and was also a one-owner. I've taken a closer look at the engine and my mechanic was correct about the leaky valve gaskets. I guess I will let let this service center do the job since they specialise in Toyota's and they have already preformed all of the previous work that I have had done on this truck.
