Engine noises, clicking/ vibration

Hey everybody!

(Video links at the end)

I’m a new Tacoma owner and so I’m pretty unfamiliar with their engines. I have a 2018 Tacoma RWD V6 3.5 L with 57k miles on it.

Recently I’ve noticed that the engine is
making a consistent clicking/rattle/ clattering kind of noise after the engine is warm and at idle. From the research I’ve done people say that’s the normal “Tacoma tick” or it’s a bad high pressure fuel pump or it’s the pump assembly vacuum. Or it could be bad lifters.

To me it sounds too loud and rough to be normal. When I sit in the cab I can noticeably feel the vibration from the engine. The engine it self doesn’t physically rattle or shake, right now it’s just a sound.

It has no check engine light, gas mileage seems normal, averages about 21 highway. All the fluids are at normal lvls and it has a stellar service history. The fuel pump was replaced at 40k miles.

I’ve added some videos

If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts that’d be greatly appreciated

Welcome aboard. Both video's sound perfectly normal for these 3.5 engines. They're different from previous tacoma engines that these have direct fuel injection using a high, and low pressure fuel pumps, plus twice the fuel injectors previous taco v6 engines had. Another words, they sound like a mini diesel. Some of these 3.5's can be noisier than others. If terribly worried, send an oil sample out to Blackstone to be analyzed for any metal.

The ticking/rattling sound in your 2018 Tacoma is most likely normal valvetrain noise (“Tacoma tick”), though it could also come from the lifters, high-pressure fuel pump, or injectors. Since there’s no check engine light, fluids and performance are normal, it’s usually not harmful. Make sure you’re using the correct Toyota-spec synthetic oil and keep an eye on it. If the noise worsens or vibration develops, have a Toyota tech inspect the lifters, fuel pump, and injectors to be safe.

Vacuum pumps on these 3.5 engines are noisy also.The. choice of motor oil has little to do with these noises. You do not need to run only toyota spec. oil. Just stay away from oils like wally worlds super tech, or amazon 0w20 synthetics ....they haven't a good enough additive package of detergents to prevent sludge from building up in these engines. Many toyota dealers such as ones near me use mobil1 ep.
